2012 Music as Muse Contest
Paired with COSA's Inaugural Concert, COSA's Youth Renaissance program also kicked off its Music as Muse Contest this year. The contest, open to high school seniors in San Antonio and the surrounding area, will welcome submissions in poetry and the visual arts as inspired by music featured at COSA concerts. 2012 Music as Muse Poetry Finalists

Alice Frederick is a senior at Keystone School, where she is an active third-year member and editor of the school's Literary Magazine. She devoted three weeks this past sumer to a Creative Writing course as part of the Educational Program for Gifted Youth at Stanford University. In addition to writing, Alice stays involved with the student body as president of the Keystone chapter of the National Honor Society and as a four-year Student Council Representative for her class. She has served as vice president of Spanish Club and participates heavily in Keystone's theater program. Alice also avidly pursues music as Student Leader of the Junior Tuesday Musical Club, violinist in the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, and co-founder of her school's a cappella group, the Keytones. 


Amanda Rothbauer is a senior and a "lifer" at Keystone School where she has attended for the past 13 years. She plays varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball, and as captain, has recently led her volleyball team to become district champions. She is an active member of her school's visual and literary arts club. In the school's chapter of National Honor Society, she is the student council representative. Her creative works have most recently appeared in Young Pegasus and the San Antonio Current's Flash Fiction Blog. 




Gabriela Bucay is a senior at Keystone School. She is currently serving her second year as the editor in chief of her school's literary and arts magazine, and in addition, coordinates a quarterly open mic night at the school. She is also involved in the performing arts, tutors in French, is captain of her softball team, vice president of her senior class, and historian of her school's chapter of the National Honor Society. She interns as a teacher's assistant in a self-awareness and community involvement course. In college, she plans to study languages, visual art, and psychology. Most recently, she has been recognized by the Columbia Scholastic Press as a first place winner for her photography portfolio.


Lucian Lodico was born in Peekskill, NY and is now a senior at Alamo Heights High School.  He has been a Choir and Band student there and would like to go to Trinity University next year to major in Vocal Performance and English. Lucian writes his own poetry, short stories and music when he’s not in school.  He is also a promising young photographer and filmmaker.  He would like to pursue a future career in the arts. His work is inspired by gospel music, Southern literature, the streets of New York City and the landscapes of West Texas.



2012 Music as Muse Visual Art Finalists

Amy Morales is a 17 year old senior at the Edgewood Fine Arts and Career academy and is ranked top ten in her class. She also is a student at a local  after school art program, SaySi. She is planning to further her education and major in the fine arts. Amy has participated in several competitions including Visual Arts scholastic Event and Scholastic Art and Writing event. Amy is actively involved in the local art community and is the president of the Art Club at her high school. She enjoys experimenting with different types of mediums including watercolor, ink and welding. Currently her series of work portrays a mix of figurative drawing and anthropomorphic elements.   

John Antonio Torres III is a senior at the Edgewood Fine Art and Career Academy. He wishes to attend UT Austin. John has taken three years of art and has performed in several Academy theater productions, including the Crucible. His work is influenced by street art and figurative drawing. John comes from a large Hispanic family on the west side of San Antonio. He hopes that he can seek a career where he can further one's skills and knowledge in art. He wants to thank his mother for being very supportive of his artwork. 



Cesar Garcia Uribe is a seventeen year old at Edgewood Fine Art and Career Academy. He has studied art for the past two years and hopes to pursue a degree in architecture at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He has participated in other competitions, including Visual Arts Scholastic Event and district-wide juried art shows. Cesar's choice of media is watercolor on paper. In his words, he is influenced by street art and surrealism. Cesar is also an athlete and has played varsity football and baseball for Memorial High School. He lives with his mom and sisters in the West Side of San Antonio.
